SERENDIPITY CELEBRATES CREATIVITY ACROSS MSH

For one week each September, the Conference Room in Building 71 looks a little bit different. Framed artwork fills the room. Colors and styles vary from piece to piece, each reflecting the creativity of the patient or resident who created it. Staff members stop to take a closer look, artists see their work displayed for others to enjoy, and the Mississippi State Hospital community comes together to celebrate one of the campus’s most anticipated annual traditions: the Serendipity Art Show.

This year’s Serendipity celebration began with two special receptions recognizing the artists whose work would be featured in the show. Residents from Jaquith Nursing Home were celebrated during the JNH Artist Reception on Tuesday, September 1. Two days later, patients from Inpatient Services gathered for the IPS Artist Reception on Thursday, September 3. The receptions gave the artists an opportunity to see their completed pieces framed and displayed in a gallery setting and, most importantly, to be recognized for the time and creativity represented by each piece.

Throughout the year, MSH Art Services provides patients and residents opportunities to explore different forms of artistic expression, develop their abilities and discover their own individual styles. Serendipity provides a chance to bring that work out of the art room and place it on display for the entire hospital community to see. For the artists, that moment can be especially meaningful. A piece that began as an idea and developed through hours of work becomes something displayed, and then admired by others.

The celebration culminated Thursday, September 3, with the 2026 Serendipity Art Show in Building 71. MSH staff, visitors and friends had the opportunity to browse the collection of original artwork created by patients and residents and place bids on pieces they hoped to take home. The annual show has become a special tradition at Mississippi State Hospital, bringing together a love of artistic expression and a shared appreciation for the talents of those served by MSH. Serendipity, however, is about more than the artwork hanging on the walls. Creative expression can provide an opportunity for patients and residents to communicate, develop confidence, learn new skills and experience the satisfaction of completing something that is uniquely their own.

The annual show provides a visible reminder that every artist has something valuable to contribute. The variety found throughout the exhibit also reflects the individuality of the artists themselves. Different subjects, techniques, colors and styles make each piece distinct, and over time some artists develop a style that becomes immediately recognizable as their own. That individuality is part of what makes walking through Serendipity each year such a unique experience. There is always something new to discover! Serendipity 2026 once again provided MSH an opportunity to celebrate creativity while recognizing the patients and residents behind the artwork. Congratulations to each of this year’s artists, and thank you to the Art Services staff, employees, friends, visitors and everyone who helped make the 2026 Serendipity Art Show a success.
